Africa Day 2019 Celebrations Organised by Limerick City & County Council

Limerick City and County Council presented a number of events in celebration of Africa Day 2019. The events kicked-off on Monday, 20th May in the Limerick City and County Council Headquarters, City Hall, Merchants Quay where the week long programme was launched by the Mayor of Limerick City and County.

On Tuesday, 21st May members of the African community visited CBS Secondary School on Sexton Street to deliver a presentation to students on African culture and history, followed by an interactive drumming session.

‘Tastes and sounds of Africa’ took place at Narrative 4, 58 O’Connell Street on Thursday, 23rd May where guests were invited to sample a variety of foods and coffees from African countries as well as have the opportunity to engage in music and song from African countries.

Football teams from across Limerick and further afield gathered at Markets Field on Saturday, 25th May to contest the Limerick Intercultural Soccer Tournament. Participants included African community teams from Limerick and Dublin as well as teams from An Garda Síochána and Limerick City and County Council.

The programme of events will closed with a ‘Family Fun Day’ at the Limerick Milk Market on Sunday, 26th May, an event that has become a regular part of Africa Day activities over the past number of years in Limerick and encompassed African food, dance, comedy, music and lots of fun.
